Happy New Year!

I spent last night at a small New Year's Eve party at joansteward's house. She had wanted to do a fondue party, and it sort of grew. Joan and Allie started planning cheese and chocolate fondue, and I added a Mongolian hot-pot.

This consisted of a broth, flavored with ginger and garlic, in which we cooked meat and veggies, and a variety of sauces for dipping. I stopped in at the 99 Ranch Market to pick up some sauces. I knew I'd want hoisin sauce, and I figured I'd look at some of the others. Plum sauce was good, and the honey garlic sauce was a nice surprise. I also found a large bag of frozen shrimp, raw, peeled, and deveined, which proved to be a very nice touch.

This is definitely something that'll be worth doing again.

Although more people had been invited, only four people made it. Joan and myself, Joan's roommate Allie, and Karen Anderson. We shared fondue, conversation, and a variety of wines and other "adult beverages". (Joan found a brand of vodka called "Prism", in a wedge-shaped bottle. It was extremely good.)

We celebrated both the leap second and the start of the new year, and then after another hour's conversation, I drove Karen home and went to my own home to go to bed.

  • I guess torture's OK by him after all.

One of the canards that gets wide circulation is the claim that "torture doesn't work". The point of this canard is that torture is useless, and so…

  • Hmmm.

A post is up at the Usual Suspect defending Barack Obama's choice of pastor. My post: Interesting... A blogger styling himself "Instaputz"…

  • Terry Karney on John McCain

Another "critique" of the man. Scare quotes this time because he reaches new lows in writing. I'd expect something this juvenile and foul-mouthed…
